Culture Carriers

Last night, I had the great privilege of attending an event called Coast to Coast at Whittier College's Ruth B. Shannon theater. The show was a culmination of amazing artists, musicians, dancers, and poets from both the East and the West. My main reason for attending was to show some love and support for the very talented Burmah Flores, but I was pleasantly surprised by the overflow of talent and creativity displayed by all of the other artists. Coast to Coast was my first experience with live spoken word, and I have fallen in love with it. I was truly moved by every artist and every performer.

I have an Art History professor who once said something pretty amazing: "You, as artists and designers, are culture carriers." After last night, I have never been more proud to be a part of a generation with such a unique and gifted voice (fellow classmates included).

We are Culture Carriers.

Running: To or From?

If you know me at all, you will know that I am by no means - no stretch of the imagination, a health nut. I firmly believe in enjoying my morning (afternoon and night time) coffee, and I eat what I like, because I enjoy that feeling of complete satisfaction after fulfilling a craving. Most of all, I don't like exercising. I would rather sit in L.A. morning traffic than exercise.

However, as of recently, my anti-exercise mantra has changed. Running has always been a fall back outlet for me. Recently, due to some new stress factors in my life, I've been running - a lot. There's something so simply satisfying about being alone and focusing only on the path that I am running or the pace of my feet.

Now, if only I could re-focus my running habits to the rest of my life.

All the Little Things

Today, I had the great pleasure of rediscovering joy in all the little things in life. Often, it is all too easy to focus on the mess that piles up in the corners of your busy life. I am usually guilty of this. But today, I was not.

Some of the little things (in no particular order):
1. laughing at myself for...car related mistakes
2. a glass of wine and good conversation with my mom
3. commiserating with friends in laughter
4. sharing a rewarding boba experience with friends
5. Love - Matt White

I asked for simplicity, and I found it in the little things.

Colors

Right now, I have two 18"x24" colored, oil pastel still lifes to finish. Here is what I've come to realize:
I miss black and white and gray. The simplicity of black and white was just so wonderful, and I missed out on the opportunity to appreciate it. It takes at least 6 or 7 colors to create one color. Color is a complicated process. It takes time and an ocean full of patience. I have neither.

At this point, I would love to live my life in black and white.

I yearn for simplicity.

Sick

I hate being sick.
I hate being sick,
then thinking I'm better,
and then getting sick again.
What the hell?
